Coppelia Eyeing former Macondo for New 24-Hour Diner
A popular 24-hour Chelsea diner is expanding to the Lower East Side.
The nine-years-running Coppelia is currently eyeing 157 East Houston for its next location. This spot, in particular, has devolved into a vandalized mess since Macondo closed down in 2017. Liquor license application materials on file with Community Board 3 confirm the news. The proposed restaurant offers nineteen tables and fifty-eight seats, plus stand-up bar with fourteen stools.
Proprietor Beatrice Rodriguez Dearma will appear this month to argue for the full liquor license.
The arrival of Coppelia is also an open challenge to the 24-hour diner monopoly held by Remedy a few blocks east at Norfolk Street.
