Former Kush Owners Plan ‘Tenement’ for Ludlow Street
The Kush man cometh. Or, rather, returneth.
Mark Osborne, the bar owner who brought the Moroccan-themed Kush to Orchard Street, is back in the old Hell Square stomping grounds. He and his past partners – also from Orchard – are gunning to open a concept called Tenement on Ludlow Street. In the old No Fun space, which went belly up last year.
According to liquor license application materials with Community Board 3, Tenement will be at 161 Ludlow and serve a “full menu of early American cuisine with a NYC immigrant theme.” It’ll have nine tables, thirty-six seats, and a bar with eleven stools.
Osborne initially opened Kush at 189 Orchard Street in 1995. It attracted the hip crowds to Hell Square before it was Hell Square. Ten years later, the bulldozers came to level the ground for what became the Thompson LES tower (now Sixty), and the establishment relocated to Chrystie Street where it morphed to a nightclub.
