Russ & Daughters Accuses Celebrity Chef Nick Liberato of Stealing its Design for ‘Borscht Belt Deli’
Russ & Daughters is calling out celebrity chef Nick Liberato for stealing its unique style for a new restaurant.
In a rather scathing Instagram post, the fourth-generation co-owners didn’t mince words. They allege that Liberato, host of the Netflix show Restaurants on the Edge), lifted the in-store experience for his soon-to-open Borscht Belt Delicatessen in Stockton, New Jersey. Signed by Niki Russ Federman and Josh Russ Tupper, the declaration demands a change in design, yet stops short of any public legal threat.
“It is deeply disheartening that you have chosen [to open a business] by copying our iconic design and messaging,” the family wrote. “These are elements that have been intrinsic to Russ & Daughters for 107 years.”
“The design that you copied for your deli does not even come from a deli,” they lambast. “You are copying us without credit, while couching your plagiarism as ‘homage.’”
To that end, Russ & Daughters did not immediately return our multiple requests for comment about any copyright protections it might possess. Or whether a legal battle is brewing.
