As expected, Christopher Marte is the next Councilman for District 1, replacing the outgoing incumbent (term-limited) Margaret Chin.
Even though results won’t officially be certified until next week, team Marte is confident in victory. Including ballots cast during Early Voting and Election Day, the upstart politician, a Lower East Side native, received 7,556 (40.14%) votes. That tally exceeds the second and third place candidates combined.
“You invested in our campaign at the peak of the pandemic because you wanted our district to have a fair shot at recovery,” Marte exclaimed in a press release yesterday afternoon. “Our campaign is a victory not just for this Council seat, but for every community in Lower Manhattan.”
As previously mentioned, Marte will sit in City Council for a two-year term, rather than the standard four years due to a census-related provision in the city charter. (Every 20 years, terms are reduced from four years to two years to coincide with the redrawing of council districts.)
