‘Ixta’ Eyes Former DBGB Space on the Bowery
The years-vacant storefront at the glassy 299 Bowery, formerly home to DBGB, has a new suitor.
Liquor license application materials reveal that restaurateur Akbarali Himani looks to revive the Ixta namesake for a new, full service restaurant serving “Authentic Mexican [cuisine] and specialty drinks.” (Ixta was a similar midtown restaurant in the early aughts.)
The proposed establishment will host 54 tables, live mariachi performers, and have two televisions. Himani seeks a full liquor license and closing times of midnight during the week and 2:00am on weekends.
Himani has been in the business for three decades. He currently owns the Chickpea in Penn Station and the Nisi Mediterranean restaurant on 47th Street, which had relocated from the West Village.
Meanwhile, little of substance has transpired at 299 Bowery since the Daniel Boulud shuttered DBGB in 2017. Principals from Ainsworth briefly considered 299 Bowery two years ago for another establishment, but ultimately scrapped those plans.
