Parks Seals ‘Hua Mei Bird Garden’ to Stave off Drug Problem in Sara D. Roosevelt Park
The area in question, nicknamed “The Pit,” is a ground zero of sorts for open-air drug sales – K2, in particular. Those who are strung out lay out; belongings accumulate in piles; and the men treat the space as a toilet. Many of the homeless reside in the recently converted hotel-shelters lining the park.
There was also a stabbing back in May.
In response, the 5th Precinct coordinated with the Parks Department to control the bleeding, as it were. The northern section of the Pit is now blocked off, effectively sealing access to the Hua Mei Bird Garden. Sources tell us that the plan was hatched to help get a handle on the illicit drug use in the park.
We’ll see how long it lasts.
Meanwhile, we hear from several residents who fear walking through or frequenting the park these days.
