Armed Man in Wheelchair Fires Shots into Crowd on Madison Street
An armed man in a wheelchair allegedly fired shots into a crowd of people outside a Lower East Side bodega Friday night, police said.
Leroy Mensah, 28, brandished a (stolen) 9mm gun outside the Stop 1 Deli on Madison Street and Rutgers Street shortly before 10:00pm on Friday. Officers on patrol reportedly chased down the suspect and made the arrest.
No one was harmed in the incident.
This intersection – just above the southerly entrance to the East Broadway subway station and doormat to the Rutgers Houses – has been problematic for years. Police even installed serious surveillance equipment on nearby lampposts as deterrence.
The officers who made the arrest later posed for a photo showing the confiscation of the firearm and its removal from the street.
Shots rang out last night on the Lower East Side when a 28-year-old male began shooting towards a group of people. Luckily nobody was struck, and officers were nearby to quickly apprehend the suspect, and recover the stolen firearm used. pic.twitter.com/aL5sGJwAXA
