What You Missed at the ‘Uncapped’ SIGNS Group Show [Recap]

Have you ever walked by a fallen street sign plowed down by a car or one swapped out with fancier new models and thought, I really like that, and I’m taking it home. Luckily for a group of likedminded people, there is a collection of weathered or shiny, sparkling or grimy, flat surfaces to litter with the bright lines, flourishes and strokes of graffiti hand styles.

The following is a recap of the first ever graffiti show done completely on street and transit signs. Aptly named, SIGNS (more on that later).

The artists spent a frenzied month gathering their signs and adorning them. They are:

  • Dynamite Spear/DS3 (from the movie, The Warriors)
  • VENA
  • KP
  • AT
  • SPAR
  • REE 2
  • ZC 1
  • BE 131
  • DEKA
  • Al Diaz
  • CEND, and
  • Megan Olson.

My partner, BRASS BK of BKGRAPHXINK is a one-stop print shop. Need a vinyl banner for your store? Sticker, decals? Balloons? A full line of merchandise with hoodies, t-shirts, socks, hats and sweatpants? He can do it all from his studio in East New York.

For this Uncapped event, which took place December 4 at the Thames Art Center in Bushwick, we agreed the artists could only use signs as their canvases.  The first name we came up with was “Transit.” But because we also had street signs, it didn’t work.  Highly impatient and frustrated after going back and forth over a show name for an hour and missing The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (yes, I just admitted that)  I spewed out my final idea: “Ugh, fine! Let’s just call it Signs.” The Hallelujah Chorus sang as Brass replied, “yes! I like it.”

And there you have it. Simple, to the point and Housewives friendly. The outcome was brilliant! Some of the artists sold their signs right off the walls! Many of them had never been to a show before or even expressed that desire. People showed up just to meet them. The elusive ex-train bomber… the shadowy ex-subway reaper….all in attendance smiles under masked faces bigger than a camera could capture. Take a look at the art below.

If you are interested in purchasing any of these, please email us or send a message on Instagram @BOWERYBOOGIEUNCAPPED. We look forward to seeing you at the next show and kindly remember, just like each of these completely one-of-a-kind signs, there is only one Bowery Boogie!
