The Soul of Fat Baby is Now ‘Restocked’ on Rivington Street

The sole of Hell Square is now operational in a former controversial nightclub. Indeed, the corner of Rivington and Essex Streets is now a consignment sneaker shop.

Fat Baby, gone; Restocked, in its stead.

Restocked just opened at 112 Rivington, and offers a marketplace to buy, sell, trade, or consign sneakers. Its arrival marks something of a turning point in the embattled Hell Square neighborhood.

The storefront at has been the proverbial front line in the protracted battle of the soul of Hell Square. Community members fed up with poor operators – like the notorious Fat Baby – and their complete disruption of quality-of-life.

“Positive change is possible for our neighborhood when residents band together and demand basic and fair quality of life standards for all,” Diem Boyd, whose LES Dwellers has led the fight, tells us. “Moreover, when CB3 listens to the community and supports raising the quality of life standards of Hell Square residents, a new shoe and clothing store is possible.”

The commercial unit that previously hosted Fat Baby has been vacant since former owner-operator Rob Shamlian cut and ran in 2017. A steady stream of real estate listings ensued, pimping the space for as much as $23,000 per month at one point. At least four nightlife suitors tried to open in the interim, but none proceeded. (The most recent was an application by The Cock in February 2021.)
