No sooner were excavation permits issued than worksite preparations began on a controversial South Street development along the Lower East Side waterfront.
Indeed, Department of Buildings on Tuesday issued official approval to the Chetrit Group to begin foundation activities for its dual 70-story tower at 265 South. By yesterday evening, a perimeter fence was in place and a pile driver parked within.

Elected officials and concerned neighbors contacted DOB earlier in the day about work onsite without the proper posting of permits. The agency responded by dispatching its inspectors.
“We found that the only work performed at the site was staging and delivery work,” a spokesperson tells us. “No digging had been performed at the site; we found no violating conditions, and did not take any enforcement actions.”
Meanwhile, general construction permits for the superstructure are not yet granted to the developer for this project.
