Councilwoman Carlina Rivera, the progressive city lawmaker from the Lower East Side, is entering the race for Congress in the newly redrawn 10th District, which spans lower Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn.
Rivera, 38, announced the news yesterday. Hanging her hat on lightning-rod achievements such as passage of the contentious SoHo-NoHo Rezoning and East Side Coastal Resiliency Project (currently amidst tree removal in East River Park).
She joins a crowded field of candidates seeking a trip to the House of Representatives, including Rep. Mondaire Jones, former Mayor Bill de Blasio, and Assemblymember Yuh-Line Niou.
Given the Blue nature of the new 10th District, the winner of the August Democratic primary is expected to win handily in the general election.
