With Heat Wave Imminent, Here are the Lower East Side Cooling Centers

With temperatures rising to extremes this week, New York City is opening cooling centers starting today to help denizens “beat the heat.”

The National Weather Service is expected to issue a heat advisory for tomorrow and Thursday. High heat and humidity are in the forecast for both days, with heat index values in the mid- to upper-90s across the city.

Here on the Lower East Side, there are ten such facilities:

  • Seward Park Library – 192 East Broadway
  • Two Bridges Community Center – 286 South Street
  • Rutgers Houses – 200 Madison Street
  • BRC Neighborhood NSC – 30 Delancey Street (seniors only)
  • Meltzer Social Club (seniors only) – 94 East 1st Street
  • UJCES Lunch Club – 15 Willett Street (seniors only)
  • Weinberg Neighborhood NSC – 197 East Broadway (seniors only)
  • Grand Street Settlement – 175 Delancey Street, 4th floor
  • Henry Street Settlement NSC – 334 Madison Street (seniors only)
  • University Settlement – 189 Allen Street (seniors only)
