Wow! A payphone that was actually repaired instead of removed from existence. Guess it’s that valuable billboard space on a sidewalk ripe with foot traffic. Advertising dollars talk. Spotted outside Casa Mezcal and Orchard Street.

Now that the Orchard Street Snack Dragon is out of the bag, we can return to the other Mexican restaurant launching further south at the corner of Broome. It’s been a long time coming, but Casa Mezcal at 86 Orchard Street is now in soft launch mode. Take a look.

It appears the plywood sidewalk shed will soon be removed from the facade of 86 Orchard Street. According to an article in Sunday’s Post, Casa Mezcal, the forthcoming Mexican cantina-club-gallery is just a few weeks shy of opening.

New Windows for Casa Mezcal at 86 Orchard

For many years, the upper brick facade of 86 Orchard Street was covered with a sign for Majestic Hosiery, the longtime business which operated at ground level. Yet, now that Casa Mezcal is commandeering the three-story space, the sign was no longer necessary.

The sidewalk shed outside 86 Orchard Street, future home of Casa Mezcal, now has an outer layer of branded wheat-paste. It’s an official announcement of its presence in the neighborhood. But a slight twist – affixed to the very bills they themselves posted is a request not to post bills.
