Last modified January 26, 2015 at 12:35 pm

Not even a month into 2015, and already the high-profile Lower East Side closures are stacking up. The greats are fading. Streit’s Matzo obviously comes to mind, with fifth-generation ownership having sold the Rivington Street factory after 90 years on the block. That teary goodbye – and subsequent relocation to New Jersey – is planned […]

The 1970 Car Crash that Nearly Knocked Out Yonah Schimmel’s

Posted August 7, 2014 at 9:12 am

This photo, culled from the FDNY archive, is crazy. Over forty years ago to the day (August 1, 1970), twenty-three-year-old Brooklynite Robert Sackett crashed his 1962 Cadillac directly into the body of 214 Forsyth Street. A Landmark Apology

Posted October 8, 2009 at 6:09 am

Taped to the door of 137 East Houston is this apology from the Landmark Sunshine Cinema.  The issue stems from a recent film screening gone awry with late-night noise problems.  Perhaps this is a fire drill of sorts in anticipation of next week’s premiere of I Kissed a Vampire. The poorly-proofed letter reads: “Dear Neighbors, […]

Nike Cometh

Posted August 15, 2008 at 3:01 pm

The Gem Hotel at 135 East Houston is now shrouded in an obtrusive Nike banner-ad. In case memory eludes you, this was the former location of a Howard Johnson. Poor Yonah Shimmel, threatened with the passage of each day.
